Indonesia to prohibit metal ore export from 2014

It's reported that Jero Wacik, the Minister of Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources has signed a ministerial Regulatory Act, which will ban all raw metal ore exports from 2014.

Priyo Pribadi Soemarno, former Chairman of the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA), said the new regulations will possibly affect nickel ore, iron ore, coal, copper, bauxite, manganese ore and other resources for manufacturers.

However, the prohibition on unprocessed ore exports will be beneficial to the country in the long run and push mining companies to invest in smelter in the country, rather than simply export ore.

So far, the Art is only applied to the main exports of metal, tin. The Indonesian government still needs to decide whether all the minerals follow the same guidelines.
