Nano fails but Sanand gains traction on India’s auto-map
Date: 08-10-2018 00:00:00

Sanand has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the Nano project. The much-hyped plant unleashed a flurry of industrial development with both national and multinational companies choosing the sleepy town for their projects. The current investment in Sanand alone may be no less than Rs 25,000 crore. Ford India has invested Rs 4,000 crore for its car plant in Sanand. Taiwanese tyre major Maxxis group recently commenced its manufacturing facility. Several auto-component makers, both domestic and international, have established their projects in the area, where GIDC has set up two industrial estates. Not just auto companies, MNCs such as Germany’s Nivea, Switzerland-based Nestle, Inbisco from Indonesia and Chipita from Greece, China’s Bao Steel, Coca Cola and Colgate-Palmolive have established plants for different products. "The investments continue to flow with Arcelor Mittal showing interest to invest Rs 15,000 crore and Russia’s NLMK Group keen to invest Rs 4,500 crore. Both the companies are looking at setting up steel plants," said a state government official. Chinese and Japanese parks have also been planned. Sanand also catapulted Gujarat to the status of a preferred investment destination for auto companies. With Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) Ltd choosing Vithalapur and Suzuki Motor Corporation Hansalpur near Bechraji for their plants, both the regions located within an 85km radius of Sanand have emerged as new hubs for auto companies.
