Global scrap consumption grows in 2019

According to a report from the Japan Ferrous Raw Materials Association According, global scrap consumption was estimated at 666.4 million tons in 2019, growing by 4.5% compared to the previous year. Among them, the consumption in China occupied the largest proportion, totaling around 284 million tons, accounting for 42.7% of the total, a year-on-year increase of 16.8%. The US ranked second, with 64.3 million tons, accounting for 9.6%, a year-on-year increase of 6%; followed by Japan, with 34.2 million tons, accounting for 5.1%, a year-on-year decrease of 8.5%. In addition, the association estimated that the global scrap steel production was 666.2 million tons in 2019, hiking by 4.6% year on year, which has risen by three consecutive years. Among them, China accounted for 42.6% of the total production in the world, totaling around 284 million tons, up by 17.2% from a prior year period.
